Why LED?
LED Lighting will be the future for all domestic and commercial lighting.
LED lighting is turning the lighting industry on its head. Until recently, LED bulbs did not produce enough light and when it did, the light was very harsh, producing a blue tint, compared to a warm white light.
Technology has advanced and now bulbs are direct replacements for halogen fittings and come in a choice of colours; warm white, cool white and also colours.
The real benefit of this new technology is the life span which is around 50,000 hours compared to 3,000 hours for old style lighting. Other benefits include reducing fire risk, as the fittings produce no heat whatsoever and for most people they can install and forget changing lamps for the next 6 to 7 years depending on hours run.
So what does this mean for you? Well a typical GU10 down light consumes up to 50 watts, whereas the same LED product consumes only 3 watts.
The savings over the year for a property can be significant. For example, take a property with 20 down lights, which could consume over £400 of electricity charges in the year. With LED products, these costs could be reduced to around £30. If electricity tariffs remained the same for the next 17 years (which is highly unlikely) you would save £6290. In addition, no replacement lamps will require to be purchased thus pushing the savings even higher.
But don’t take our word for it, Cathy Debenham of YouGen wrote a fantastic article on the difference of annual energy savings in the home. We are sure this will convince you to change the type of lamps you use in the future.
